Experience Italy: Quick Tips For Your Italian Adventure
Before you pack your bags, read here for some general tips to help you experience Italy like a pro.
WHAT IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT ITALY?
The best time to visit Italy depends on what you want to experience:
Spring (April to Early June): Pleasant weather. Highs below 80 degrees, fewer crowds, and flowers in full bloom.
Fall(September to October): Highs average about 75 degrees. Fewer tourists. Many local festivals.
Summer (July to August): Most popular season! PLAN AHEAD! Highs reaching 90 degrees and more. Crowded, high prices. Great beaches. Some businesses in smaller towns may be closed.
Winter (November to March): Fewer tourists and lower prices. Highs vary by locations, but expect highs from 30-50 degrees, lows range 20-40 degrees. Great for skiing and Christmas markets.
WHAT ARE SOME TIPS TO HELP ME EXPERIENCE ITALY’S CULTURE?
To experience Italy is to embrace la dolce vita (the good life). Here are some miscellaneous tips that we have observed after many years of travel to Italy.
-Tipping is seen as a bonus for good service, not a requirement. 5% - 10% is sufficient. Tour guides are the only exception where it is customary to tip 10%-20% of tour cost.
-Cappucino after noon is frowned upon.
-It is illegal in Rome to swim, splash, or put your feet into a fountain.
-Bring a water bottle, you can drink from many water fountains throughout the country.
-Make-up is very minimal for Italian women.
-Nail and Hair Salons are scarce, but barber shops are abundant.
-Shorts are not worn by Italian women unless you are a teenager.
-Bikini’s are for all ages.
-Religious sites require women to cover their shoulders and knees. Pack a scarf.
-Gym attire is for the gym, not the street.
-Casino’s have dress codes.
-Beach wear is for the beach only, this includes flip-flops.
-Rocky beaches require water shoes. You can easily purchase them in Italy.
-Cash (euro) is usually required for Small Purchases under $10, Public Restrooms, Cabs, and Tours (unless you book and pay in advance).
-UBER is very limited. To date, Rome, Florence, Milan, and Naples have Uber and only offer black car service.
-Great food is still very inexpensive. Avoid the restaurants that circle the high tourist areas. Get recommendations.
-The local house wine is always the best.
-High-Speed Trains are a great option when traveling through Italy. Book your ticket in advance and don’t forget to validate your ticket before boarding the train.
We hope some of these tips help you feel a little more like a native and less like a tourist.
